This portfolio is a second selection from the images that I took in Japan during 1990 and 1991. Those who visited my site earlier and saw the first ten photographs (still available as an e-portfolio via the link at the bottom left of the screen) will be familiar with the way in which I attempted to capture a little of the hidden, off-beat beauty which the 'alien', or outsider's, eye is in a far better position to reveal. This new series follows the same theme, but with less emphasis on the kitsch and 'kawaii' (cute) to which the Japanese sometimes seem addicted, and more on the beauty of old Japan, which stands in such stark contrast to the jumbled mass of concrete and overhead wires that greets the visitor to every town and city today. Fortunately, traditional Japan is alive and well, but it is becoming harder to 'see', not least for the Japanese themselves. view
