Sachiko's garden measures only 5ft x 3ft, which makes it pretty small, even by Japanese standards. It occupies a tiny space flanking the entrance to her designer boutique in Chiang Mai, Thailand, yet with a single rock and several tall bamboos she has succeeded in creating a miniature world in the true tradition of the genre. For 45 minutes each morning, Sachiko's garden comes dramatically to life as the sun rises over an adjacent building and then passes out of sight once more above the eaves of her shop. The individual elements take on an unexpected grandeur and the shadows cast by them create an extraordinary illusion of space. All I had to do was be there.
