There has been a temple on the site of Wat Phantong in Chiang Mai, Thailand since the 13th or 14th century. Today's building stands in decidedly secular surroundings on the street that is rapidly becoming the city's answer to Bangkok's infamous Patpong, yet it still retains an air of tranquility and detachment. The compound is heavily shaded by trees, which allow only angled sunlight to penetrate during the early morning and late afternoon. These were the times that I visited Wat Phantong, looking in the less obvious corners for my images and always attracting curious stares from the resident novice monks. I hope that this portfolio conveys something of the secluded atmosphere created by nature's minimalist lighting, using which I have attempted to isolate miniature portraits of this old temple's unique environment.
